When we talk about what skills we or other have we might talk about sports, maths or ability to persuade people, but rarely we say “that person is really good at ability to change”.
We might think that someone is able to adapt, however adaption is a response to necessary based on circumstances and almost being forced to.
If you are slightly obese, changing diet and do more exercise to lose 15kg and be able to walk up the stairs without huffing is not just adaption, it’s a change. You will adapt by sitting down to tie your shoelace. If you lose weight you will be able to squat to tie it instead.
Hence I want to write about ability to change. The ability say to yourself that you are going to do something which goes against your pattern of behaviour and do it.
To be able to pause and take a step aside when your brain tells you to do what you would normally do.
Is the first thing in the morning you do that you grab a phone and look at news on social media for 15 media? Have you done it it for the last 6 months and it just got worse?
How much mental discomfort does it take to pick up a book instead? Are you even able to step aside from the scrolling to realise that you wanted to read a book or do you notice after you had to get up to go to work?
To change your behaviour is a skill that you can train up and then have it in your toolbox. When it’s needed you can find it somewhere inside and use it. But only way how to find it is to practice it.
Change a small thing. Then “fail” in changing it and do it 50 times over.
Change based on what is happening around you and how life moves on.
Put yourself into small discomfort.
Similarly to meditation, you end up in an odd way, failing in making changes as they are never done. Same as if you like running then there isn’t one last step in your mind you are going to make and be done with running.
Life moves on, world is changing, people are changing, so we have to as well.
